Blobbu is a small static website. It has no accounts, sets no cookies, and runs no tracking scripts or ads. Visit counts come from the host's server logs (see Netlify, below). This page explains what happens to the little bit of data it does touch.
Your blob lives in the link
Your quiz answers, a random number (the "salt") and your blob's name are put in the part of the web address after the #, for example #a=0123&s=1x2y3z&n=Smokey. That part is called the fragment. Browsers don't include the fragment when they request a page, so it isn't sent to the server that hosts Blobbu. The blob is drawn entirely in your browser.
The fragment does stay in the link itself. If you share the link, whoever receives it, and any app or service you use to send it, can see the answers and the name. Your browser may also keep the link in its history like any other page. The name is whatever you type, so don't use anything you wouldn't want in a link.
Saved blobs (only if you say yes)
Blobbu saves nothing in your browser unless you choose Allow in the storage notice. If you do:
- It uses your browser's local storage, under one key:
blobbuddy.v1. - That key holds your choice (
consent: "yes") and, when you press Save, the blobs you saved, up to 24. Each saved blob is just its answers, salt and name, the same things that are in its link. - It is written when you press Allow and each time you save or remove a blob.
- It never leaves your browser. Blobbu doesn't send it anywhere.
To delete it, use Clear my data at the bottom of the main page, or choose No thanks in Storage settings. Both remove the key completely. Clearing your browser's site data for Blobbu does the same. If you choose No thanks, nothing is stored, so your choice isn't remembered and you'll see the notice again on your next visit.
Sharing and downloads
Share opens your device's own share sheet if it has one; otherwise it copies the link to your clipboard. Either way, Blobbu hands the link to your device and nothing goes to us. What happens next depends on the app you pick. PNG and Card create their images in your browser and download them to your device.
Other companies involved
The Inter font is served from this site itself, so loading the page doesn't contact any font service.
- Netlify. Netlify hosts the site. Like any web host, it processes request data, such as your IP address, browser user agent and the page requested (not the fragment), and keeps it in its server logs. Blobbu uses Netlify Web Analytics, which builds aggregate statistics (page views, unique visitors, top pages, top locations, pages not found and bandwidth) from those server logs. It runs no code in your browser and sets no cookies. Unique visitors are counted as distinct IP addresses per day. [TO CONFIRM: how long Netlify keeps Web Analytics data.] [TO CONFIRM: what Netlify's logs contain for this site and how long Netlify keeps them.]
- PayPal. The optional tip link takes you to PayPal.me. Once you follow it you're on PayPal's site, and PayPal's privacy policy applies. Blobbu doesn't send PayPal anything about your blob.
- Share previews. To show a preview image when a link is posted in a chat or social app, a small Netlify Function receives the blob's answers, salt and name in the query string (the part of the address after
?). Unlike the fragment, the query string is sent to the server, so it may appear in Netlify's request logs.
